Geospatial Tools for Safe Water Planning & Asset Management
Availability and access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services is fundamental to preserving the health and well-being of the world’s population. 2.2 billion people around the world still lack safely managed drinking water, including 785 million without basic drinking water. (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, un.org/sustainabledevelopment)
Safe Water Enterprises (SWEs) are doing incredible work across the globe to address an extensive demand for safe water provision in lower-middle income countries. In order to assist them with planning, operational, and management efficiencies that will scale, we are developing a custom toolkit to support this innovative sector.

Safe Water Resilience Toolkit
The Safe Water Resilience Toolkit is an open-source planning and asset management application that builds resilience while mirroring the workflow of Safe Water Enterprises (soon to expand for use by other safe water implementers).
What are Safe Water Enterprises (SWEs)?
• SWEs are considered one of the most effective, efficient, and sustainable solutions for achieving SDG 6 in lower-middle income countries, through their decentralized, market-based approach for safe water provision.
• They are well-positioned to deliver essential water services to vulnerable off-grid communities and address barriers to sustainability and the scale of safe water supply in emerging economies.
How are we supporting them?
• The Safe Water Resilience Toolkit caters specifically to SWE program needs while integrating comprehensive planning, risk analysis and mitigation directly into their workflow.
• This digital solution provides measurable cost and time efficiencies, and ensures the long-term provision of safe water at scale.
We are building this toolkit in close collaboration with our incredible partners at Safe Water Network, ensuring that this is a sector-relevant, easy-to-use, and powerful GIS application.
The Safe Water Resilience Toolkit mirrors the workflow of Safe Water Enterprises as they plan, operate and manage their businesses. The series of five tools will guide them through site selection, risk assessments, infrastructure design, mitigation planning, and field sales operations.
Toolkit Interfaces
The following images illustrate the interfaces of the five tools within the Safe Water Resilience Toolkit. They also demonstrate how we digitized Safe Water Network's formerly paper-based processes, and indicate the geospatial data model used to produce the risk and resiliency indices.
